  MANUSCRIPT MUSIC BOOK.

Physical description:

1 volume.

Date:

1863.

Provenance:

Purchased from J & J Lubrano January 1990.

Scope and content:

Bound volume of manuscript music.  Fly-leaf reads "Songs. F.W. [Naumsem ?], Knoxville, Tenn Oct 1st 1863". Seven pieces of music are written in order from the front of the book to the back; all of these pieces include both words and music.  There are 14 pieces written in order from the back to the front; only three of these include both words and music.  Two different inks, one brown and one blue, were used in the volume and it seems likely that these pieces were entered at different times by different individuals.  Lyrics to several of the songs are in German, one is in French.

Among the song titles written front to back are: Her bright smile haunts me still, The cottage by the sea, Bertrogene liebe, Streirisches lied and Die Trauernde.  Among the song titles written back to front are Tho I leave thee now in sorrow, The zephyr, Coming thro the rye, May dance waltz, Voices of the flowers waltz, Wood nymph waltz, Jenny Lind serenading polka, Airs Russes, Auf wiedershen, Only a lullaby, Love's dreamland, Merriment polka, and Les sylphes.
